Talk on RF Applications of PIN Diodes.

The IEEE MTT/ED/SSCS Penang Chapter is very pleased to bring you a talk on “RF Applications of PIN diodes” by Mr. Lim Chin Leong of Avago Technologies, Penang.

Abstract
PIN diodes are the ubiquitous "nuts & screws" components that hold together RF equipment as varied as the television, radio, 2-way radios, WLAN equipment etc. This talk will begin with a brief discussion on PIN diode characteristics. This is followed by an introduction to the various RF applications in the area of RF switches, attenuators and limiters. Performance improvement techniques will also be discussed.

Biography
Lim Chin Leong studied in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur (1985-90). He was introduced to the sometimes exciting, sometimes excruciating art of RF hacking while designing automotive FM and AM broadcast-band receivers at the R&D labs of Robert Bosch Penang. From 1997 to the present, he works as an application engineer for RF diodes and GaAs semiconductors in Avago Technologies Malaysia. He has authored several conference and journal articles in the area of RF/uW technology.

University of Portsmouth Business School MBA Scholarships

THE University of Portsmouth Business School in the United Kingdom is offering scholarships to students keen to pursue its full-time MBA (International) programme.

The programme, introduced in 2001, received accreditation from the globally-recognised Association of MBAs last year. Innovative features of the MBA course include the chance to attend a one-week conference in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

This gives participants the chance to network with practising managers in the United Kingdom from the MBA Executive programme and also help them gain a European perspective on management styles.

Abstract – In this talk, a systematic methodology to design sub-90 nm split-gate Flash memory cells and optimize the cell performance within the presently known scaling constraints will be discussed. The increasing demands for Flash memory in mobile and embedded applications are driving the Flash memory technology to its scaling limit. The split-gate Flash memory cells have shown a tremendous potential in a stand-alone memory chip as well as in a system-on-chip (SoC) because of their over-erase and over-program immunity along with their simple architecture, robustness, manufacturability, and reliability in embedded applications. However, the conventional split-gate NOR Flash memory cells have severe scaling limitations due to their decreasing programming-coupling ratio and increasing program-inhibit parasitic leakage current and programmed-cell leakage current, and so on with down-sizing. On the other hand, in order to utilize the over-erase and over-program immunity of a split-gate cell along with its simple program erase (P/E) mechanisms in mobile and embedded applications and to keep parity with the main-stream CMOS technology, it is crucial to scale split-gate Flash memory cells to sub-90 nm regime. Therefore, in recent years, an enormous interest has been generated in scaling down split-gate Flash memory cells. However, due to the scaling limitations of Flash memory, all the scaling efforts on split-gate Flash memory have been limited to 90 nm regime. In this talk, a simulation-based methodology to optimize the proper technology parameters in achieving high performance sub-90 nm split-gate Flash memory cells and characterize the electrostatic and P/E characteristics the cells is presented.

Dr. Samar K. Saha received the M.S degree in Engineering Management from Stanford University, CA, USA and the Ph.D degree in Solid State Physics from Gauhati University, Guwahati, India. Dr. Saha worked as an Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering Department at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL, and Auburn University, Auburn, AL. Since 1984 he has worked in various positions for National Semiconductor Corporation, LSI Logic Corporation, Texas Instruments, Philips Semiconductors, Silicon Storage Technology, Synopsys, and DSM Solutions. He is the Director of Device Design at Silterra USA, Inc., an Adjunct Professor in Electrical Engineering Department at Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, CA, and an Associate Graduate Faculty in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, NV. His research interests include nanoscale device and process architecture, Technology CAD, Compact modeling, and TCAD and R&D management. He has authored more than 70 research papers, holds four US patents, and offered numerous tutorials/short-courses on compact modeling and Technology CAD.

Dr. Saha is a senior member of IEEE and Distinguished Lecturer of Electron Devices Society (EDS). He was the Principal Guest Editor of the Special Issue of IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRON DEVICES on “Advanced Compact Models and 45-nm Modeling Challenges.” He is the Editor-In-Chief of IEEE QuestEDS, EDS representative to the Editorial steering committee of IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING, Chair of IEEE-EDS Compact Modeling Technical Committee, Chair of EDS SRC-NAW, member of EDS publications committee, EDS representative to the Council of Electronic Design Automation (C-EDA), and the Chair of IEEE EDS Santa Clara Valley chapter. He is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.

Indian Achievements in the USA vs Malaysia

USA: First known immigrant from India was in 1790 as a maritime worker.
MSIA: Earliest contact was more than 1500 years ago. Migration facilitated by the British began in 1786 when the British acquired Penang, Melaka and Singapore.

USA: Indian population is 3% in 2000. That's around 1 million at least. Over 100% growth rate since then, highest in the country.
Msia: 8% in 2007. Dropped from 12% in 1957. Estimated to be 4% in 2057

USA: Indian Americans have a median income of around $60,000 which is the highest of any national origin group in the United States. This is 25% higher than for all U.S. households.
MSIA: Malaysian Indians poorest in the country. Indians have the lowest per capita income of only about RM 1000 per month when the national per capita income is projected at RM17,741 in the 2006 budget (The Star Online September 30th 2005) This is about 98.3% below the national average. At the ground many ethnic Indian families earning a mearge RM450.00 per month. After 46 years of independence the state has capped the monthly salary of plantation workers at RM325.00 (USD85.00) per month and RM 350.00 (USD92.00) per month for rubber tappers.

USA: 50% of all economy lodges and 35% of all hotels and motels in the U.S. are Indian-owned. 50% of Asian Indians in the U.S. own their own home.
Msia: 30% Indians are living in squatters or on temporary occupation license land. Their squatter colonies are in turn demolished to make way for development with no or little alternative housing. Classical case of poverty leading to further poverty.

USA: One in every 26 Indians in the US is a millionaire, comprising 10% of US millionaires. Merrill Lynch recently revealed that there are nearly 200,000 Indian American millionaires.
Msia: Anandha, Tony, Samy, err...Anandha, Tony, Samy...

USA: Indian Americans have the highest educational qualifications of all national origin groups in the United States. 64% of Indian Americans have a Bachelor's degree or more, compared to 28% nationally. Almost 40% of all Indians have a master’s, doctorate or other professional degree, which is five times the national average.
MSIA: University intake for Indians reduced from 20% in 1956 and by about 50% from the over 10% quota in 1970 to 5.2% in 2003. (Note: IF all MARA higher education institutes and overseas scholarships are taken into account the Indians would actually end up having only about 1% of intake into higher education institutions) In 2004 the supposed meritocracy system was introduced but it turned out to be “meritocracy without merits” Hundreds of especially poor ethnic minority Malaysian Indian students were deprived of their basic right to education. Matriculation courses for entry into public universities are almost exclusively for the majority Malay Muslim community.

USA: According to the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, there are close to 41,000 Indian American doctors.
MSIA: Medical seats in the University of Malaya was reduced by 98% from 16 seats in 2001 to only 1 seat in 2003. This in effect means that the almost 1.8 million Indians have to compete for just one (1) medical seat at this university. When they opted to study at affordable Universities overseas, the government in June 2005, in an effort to reduce the number of ethnic Malaysian Indian medical students studying overseas acted in the most hostile manner. The Crimea State medical university’s medical degrees were derecognised for dubious and questionable reasons. In an effort to reduce the number of Indian medical doctors most other foreign medical universities with high ethnic Malaysian Indian student enrolment is currently having its status reviewed and is also expected to be derecognised.

USA: 43.6% of Indian Americans are employed in managerial and professional specialties. Technical, sales, and administrative support occupations constitute another 33.2% of the work force. The remaining 23.3% of the population works in other areas, such as operators, fabricators, laborers and precision production.
MSIA: 70% of ethnic Malaysian Indians have degenerated into becoming laborers, Industrial Manual Group (IMG) workers, office boys, security guards, public toilet cleaners, general workers, road sweepers, beggars, squatters, criminals, gangsters etc. Fifty-four (54%) of Malaysian Indians work as plantation or urban underpaid laborers. (Asiaweek 26/1/2002). Only around 25% are professionals.

USA: 40%, only 4 out of 10 Indian immigrants have taken up U.S. citizenship. 75% of Asian Indians were born outside the U.S.A.
Msia: All Malaysian Indians are MALAYSIAN citizens, mostly born in Malaysia.

MERCK Sdn Bhd, in collaboration with US-based HMD Chemicals Inc,has launched its inaugural nationwide Merck Young Scientist Award(MYSA) 2008.

The objectives for the award are to encourage and honour home-grownresearch and development excellence in the biosciences. The competition will accept only published research papers or researches that are due for publication in selected speciality areas of bioscience study.

Another key condition for entry acceptance is that the researchmust be conducted at local institutions of higher learning. Allentries must reach Merck by April to qualify. Originality, quality and impact of the research on the future development of the biosciences in Malaysia are expected to be amongthe key elements driving the judging. The top five finalists are required to present their research papers to the panel of judges for the final winner to be decided.

The Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) is pleased to announce its first competition for grants under the VijayashankerFoundation Award forstudents interested in pursuing an undergraduate (Bachelor's) degreein the field of Actuarial Science at a regionally accredited US university in the fall of 2008.

Amount and Period of Award
The Vijayashanker Foundation will provide partial tuition scholarshipup to two years in the US for this competition. Preference will begiven to candidates from American Degree twinning or transfer programs(ADP) at local colleges. This award will only cover the tuition in theUS.

Eligibility
To be considered for selection under this program, students shall:

1. Possess Malaysian citizenship;
2. Be no more than 30 years of age at the time of application;
3. Completed at least first semester of second year of ADP;
4. Have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.33 during ADP;
5. Demonstrate quantitative ability through the ADP program;
6. TOEFL and SAT requirements are based on the student's school ofchoice. If your university does not require these tests forapplication, you are NOT required to submit the tests results to MACEEor vice versa.
7. Students are not required to be accepted to a US university inorder to apply for this scholarship, but students are REQUIRED toapply and be accepted to a US university by May 2008 in order to fullyqualify for the award if they are nominated by the committee.

Dear Fellow Indians,

Greetings! I am working as a lecturer, researcher supervisor, and statistician in Thailand, in two institutions of higher learning. I teach at bachelor's, Master's, and PhD levels. I got my PhD when I was 25+ in 2002, and now, I am the author of 4 books and go around speaking to international groups of people.

When in High School (Klang High School), I was just an average kid. What motivated me to go this far, in such a young age? Well, the answer is: I had role models... Heroes that I looked up to (the first one was a blind person who completed his PhD in the UK and became the country's economist...I forgot his name though, but I still remember his face... I read about him in the Moral Education Textbook in Form 4). Do you have one? More than one? Please do. Read about great personalities of this world... Learn from them, strive to be better than them... YOU CAN. There is nothing you cannot accomplish if you set your mind to doing. Our failures and our limitations are only in our minds. Frankly speaking, we can do anything we want to... when we want to do it badly enough.

I have been out of the country for about 14 long years. It's time I came back home... and what do I wish to do there in Malaysia? I want to help... every young person... Malay, Chinese, Indian - to believe in themselves and to become the best they can be. WE are the future and what happens tomorrow depends on our choices today. Let's make the right choices... so that tomorrow could be a better day!

These are the few things that I plan out initially to keep the group moving and focus on the objective. There are still some discussions going on about this plan, so I will post the discussion outcomes and comments regarding to the initial plan as stated here:-

a) Since, we have many Indian friends working in different companies
especially MNCs, private and public sectors, this group will be a perfect
platform to alert our fellow Indians and fresh graduates in a timely manner.

b) I am sure we are aware of situations whereby some jobs are not available
publicly via newspapers and only through friends network. ( Other communities
have great link for such job alerts )

Places to Study

a) Other than currently available IPTA and IPTS, we will also advise some
places to study within Malaysia and outside Malaysia.

b) At the same time we will get some seniors from universities to provide
details about certain courses if you are not so sure what it is all about (
before submitting the application form ).

Scholarships and Loans

a) SPM and STPM results will be coming out soon. As part of our concern to
prepare and guide our students financially, we will post scholarships and loans
available for university students - from time to time.

b) All you have to do is, just mail us any info about any scholarships or
loans that you come across and we will publish in our website.

Welfare and Projects

a) This will be our main event. We will try to organize small welfare events
and projects ( such as offering IT knowledge to primary school students,
visiting rural schools to see what are the basic needs they are lacking – then
escalate, and etc )

b) This will include any welfare projects that being conducted by Indian
Representative Clubs in universities and colleges. Please contact us if you need
to inform us about your universities’ projects. We may not be able to help you
financially, but we will see what we can offer.

Q: Will this group involve in any political activities?

A: The answer is a definite NO. We are not an anti-government
nor pro-government group. We are neutral professional group, which means we

concern is Indians, the development of Indians, the welfare and anything

Q: How we are going to help Indians?

A: We are planning to educate and create awareness among

Q: What we ( all of us ) can do ?

A: We need representative from all the Multinational
Companies- MNC (
Intel, Infineon, Alterra, Silterra, Motorola, Renesas and so on ) ,
representatives from all the Universities and Colleges and from all the
States in Malaysia. This will make it easier for us to waterfall any useful
information ( such as vacancy, scholarships, higher learning oppurtunities)
that we have.

First of all, who are professionals?

Wikipedia definition:-
A professional can be either a person in a profession (certain types of skilled work requiring
formal training/education) or in sports (a sportsman/sportwoman doing sports for payment). Sometimes it is also used to indicate a special level of quality of goods or tools, sometimes also called "commercial grade".

This website ( or blog ) is created as a meeting place for all Malaysian Indian Professionals who are scattered
around the country.
This website is solely for development of Indian community.

What is our objectives?
- to help our Indian community who needs us. We need every single doctors, engineers, lawyers, accountants, IT programmers and many other professionals to understand and take up their responsibility to do their part for the future of our beloved Indian community.

- our Chinese friends have their own association and groups to express their opinions ( if you remember Program
Sekolah Wawasan ) but who do we have to express our views?

- does this means we are complementing some other 'Indian groups' ? No, not at all. We support every Indian groups that trying their level best to uphold our rights and development. All that we want is a group that can think and act professionally.

- we are more like NGOs, we are not against government nor supporting anyone. All that we will do is to help our Indian community. If there is any programme that benefits us, we will welcome them with open heart. If the programme will affect us in some way, we will express ourselves professionally.

How we - the professionals - going to help our community?
- are we expecting money or donation? Again. not at all. We need people who can contribute their knowledge and ideas for our very own development. ( Simple example- help and share your knowledge to Indian students. Teach them, guide them, educate them why education is necessary)

- that is just a simple example. Of course we can do more. This is just a beginning. We will grow day by day, with increasing number of professionals, more ideas will be flowing in.

What you can do?
- tell us what we can do to help our Indians.
- register yourself in this blog. We are creating a database to know total number of Indian Professionals in
Malaysia. It's free to register.
